답은 (C)가 됩니다. 이하, 상세히 설명드릴게요.

 

다들 문법책에서 관계대명사 공부하실때, 관계대명사 = 대명사+접속사 역할 이라고 많이들 보신 적 있으시죠? 그 이유에 대해 한번 써보면,

 

1) The convention was attended by hundreds of university students.                             

2) Many of them stopped by our booth

 

위 두문장을 한 문장으로 합칠때, 그냥 합치면 되나요? 안되죠? 영어에선 한 문장에선 동사를 하나밖에 못 쓰기 때문이죠. 접속사를 사용해야 하죠. The convention was  attended by hundreds of university students, and many of them stopped by our booth 처럼 말이죠.

 

하지만, 관계대명사를 사용해서도 위 두 문장을 합칠 수 가 있어요.

The convention was attended by hundreds of university students, many of whom stopped by our booth.   처럼 말이죠.

 

즉, 여기서 whom은 앞의 students를 지시하는 대명사역할과, 두 문장을 합쳤기 때문에 접속사 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있는 것입니다.
